David Fletcher DipRSL, MISM, - Drummer, Percussionist, Teacher
Hello and thanks for visiting! I'm David, and I first started drumming at the age of 11, studying drums, timpani and xylophone whilst at school. I was soon totally hooked on drumming, joined the school band, and began attending the South Notts school of music, as well as playing with the county youth band. A few years later after leaving school I became resident drummer and band leader for one of the Trusthouse Forte hotel chain, playing 3 or 4 nights per week and enjoying every minute of it!
Since then I've been lucky enough to record and perform with some wonderful musicians at some equally wonderful venues. My London based cabaret / jazz band has seen some great gigs in the nations capital, including the prestigious Dorchester Hotel, Sofitel St James, and performing for the star studded Evening Standard Film Awards at the Savoy Hotel.
My main drumming outlet however has been with Military Bands. I love the variation that such bands give you and the opportunity to play all kinds of percussion instruments.. One day you could be playing drumkit in a small ensemble for an officers mess dinner, the next playing with the marching band or pipes and drums for a big parade, playing timpani and tuned percussion for a theatre concert, or behind the kit for a swinging big band gig. Over the years I've been fortunate to perform at some amazing places, including Horse Guards Parade (London), The Royal Albert Hall, The British Military Tournament (Earls Court), The Berlin Military Tattoo (Germany), Sorlondet Tattoo (Norway), plus many others in the UK, France, Germany and Holland. Many of these concerts have involved playing as part of a massed military band, drumming alongside musicians from the bands of the Italian Army, French Foreign Legion, Polish Navy and more. My career highlight however has to be playing snare drum on stage with Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra, a truly unforgettable experience.
With new friendships formed and experience gained, I realized that music truly is a universal language that has the power to bring people together. This is one of the reasons why I love to help others to learn to play drums and go on to discover the joys of music for themselves. I've been teaching drums and percussion since 1991, both privately and in schools, and have taught literally 100s of people to play. Many of these have gone on to perform with bands and some have even gone on to play professionally or become teachers themselves. I constantly undertake training and professional development to provide the very best tuition that I can. I hold a Rockschool RSL Professional Music Teaching Diploma (level 4) and am a member of the Independent Society of Musicians. In addition, I hold public liability insurance, and am fully CRB/DBS checked.
So, in a nutshell, Im at my happiest when playing drums, be it in a rock or funk band, symphony orchestra, jazz group or marching band. I hope that I can pass on some of my enthusiasm for drumming through my drum tuition.
